Anesthetics are panacea for the pain treatment. Analgesics can be narcotic and non-narcotic. Narcotic analgesics are more effective, work longer and arrest even the severest pain. But all of them have a lot of side effects. Tramadol is a unique analgesic which does not have many side effects but act as opioid drugs.
Tramadol is an opioid analgesic of the central action which quickly arrests a severe pain. Tramadol is inferior to morphine (according to the pharmacological activity) but it binds with opioid receptors in lesser degree. Due to this, the optimal pain-relieving effect is achieved without harmful action to a patient’s body.
The analgesic effect of Tramadol develops within 15-20 minutes after the peroral use and lasts for 4 to 6 hours depending on the sensitivity of the receptors in the CNS. After absorbing from the GIT, Tramadol activates the opiate receptors, slows down the destruction of catecholamine’s and enhances the painful threshold by means of the action to the spinal cord.
In therapeutic doses, Tramadol does not increase the pressure in the pulmonary artery, does not influence on motion of the gastro-intestinal tract, and does not cause a medical addiction. A resistance to the action of Tramadol can appear during the prolonged treatment and use of high doses.
Tramadol is released in the form of pills, capsules and solution for the intramuscular injection. The Tramadol pills are white and round, or oval depending on a manufacturer
Every pill can contain 50 mg, 150 mg/200 mg (pills of the prolonged action) of the active ingredient.
Who is prescribed?
Tramadol is prescribed patients over 18 years old with acute or chronic pain syndrome of any origin: neurological, traumatic, inflammatory, and others.
How to take Tramadol?
Toarrestpain, the optimal single dose of Tramadolis 50 mg. The pills/capsules are taken with enough water, regardless of the meals. The dose interval should be at least one hour. Of chronic pain syndrome, it is recommended to take Tramadol 50 mg every 6 hours.
If severe pain syndromes in oncology patients, the maximal daily dose of Tramadol 400 mg is allowed (1 pill/capsule of Tramadol 50 mg every 3 hours).
The pills of prolonged action Tramadol 150/200 mg are used every 12 hours.
– Tramadol is not used with other opioid analgesics
– Avoid alcohol consumption during the treatment
– If you are taking medicines inhibiting CNS, Tramadol can enhance their action
– Tramadol is contraindicated during respiratory depression, alcohol intoxication, drug intoxication, epileptic syndrome, and renal/hepatic failure.
Using Tramadol may enhance sweating, cause muscle weakness, high fatigue, sleepiness, nausea, thirst, or spasms. The daily dose should be reduced during these side effects.
If a patient has an allergic reaction or severer side effects, the treatment should be stopped.
